Why Do I Need a Website for My Small Business?

Do you have a small business website yet?

Websites these days are as ubiquitous as a Starbucks coffee shop, and they are as diverse as the people who create them. Yet, amazingly, there are many small businesses who are still operating without a website, or any kind of internet presence. Which is quite surprising since the internet, as we know it, has been around since 1990, when computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web.

That being said, the number of small businesses who have embraced the internet to help them promote their business, is increasing steadily. However, according to this report, there are still an estimated 2 million SME’s without an internet presence. Which is costing them a whopping £343 Billion a year!

So, in this connected age, what’s holding them back? Why are there so many businesses that still don’t see the value of being online?

There are, of course, many reasons for these figures, but one of the ones that makes most sense to us is that the majority of small business owners are over 51.  As we get older and busier, we fall out of touch with technology as we settle into our ways. Bearing that in mind, it should come as no surprise then that most small business owners without websites are not so ‘tech savvy’.  They tend to dismiss the need for a website because:

  • They don't understand it and how it could help their business
  • It seems too expensive, complicated, time-consuming, etc.
  • They're “doing just fine without it” or they've “never needed one before”

Consider how much the internet has changed in the last 10 to 15 years: smartphones, tablets, Google, Facebook, Twitter, the slow death of newspapers, Amazon, etc. It's now a very different world we live in.

Let’s consider these objections in a little more detail, and we’ll take a look at some specific reasons why your small business should have a website in today’s connected world.

Why Do I Need a Website for My Small Business?

Lush Domain Website Designer in Surrey - You need A Website

A professional website meets customer expectations:

Now more than ever, people expect to be able to find information about your company online, a massive 89% of adults in Great Britain now use the internet at least weekly. In fact, most consumers now do research online before they make a purchase, even if it’s to buy something from a local shop. Think about your own internet use, I bet you’re no different. If you don’t have a website, how can people find you? If you don’t have a website, you’re sending a message to those people that your business is stuck in the past, or even worse, that you’re not interested in finding new customers. Neither of these are messages that you probably want to be sending.

A website needn’t be overly complicated, or a multi-page ‘tome’ detailing every nook and cranny of your business existence. It could be just a few simple pages detailing your business high-lights and achievements. The main priority is that the information contained in it, MUST be accurate, up to date, and tailored to the needs of a prospective visitor.

You are in control of information and branding:

There are so many platforms on the internet where people can talk about your business, places where you have no control over what is said and published. A website that you control, not only establishes an ‘Official’ presence on the internet, but it also give you the control over what is said about your business. It gives you control about the image your business portrays, you have complete control of colours, logos, fonts, branding and content.

A website is more affordable than traditional advertising:

Take a moment to think about how people, yourself included, search for information they need. Gone are the days when you reached for a local Yellow Pages! In-fact, when was the last time you even saw a Yellow Pages directory?

Sure, online versions of those directories still exist, and there is a place for them still. But what if you had a website, and it was the first one listed when people searched for your ‘thingamabob’? Traditional advertising markets are forever shrinking, and becoming more expensive. On the other hand, website costs are decreasing every year and have a wider reach. There has been a huge shift in where/how prospective customers are searching for information in recent years. A website is now a ‘first port of call’!

A website is now easier to keep up to date:

There was a time when a website was difficult to update, unless you knew all the geeky code that made it work. But things have changed in recent years. Websites can now be designed that are easy to update with your own stories, photos and products. Of course the main structure of a website still needs to be coded specifically to your needs, but the content within that structure is editable. If you can use MS Office, you can update your own website.

You can find existing and potential customers:

A website helps to put your business in front of people you may never have thought of as potential customers. It gives you the ability to interact with those people who may just become new customers. Even customers from the other side of the world will be able to communicate there needs with your business. Have you ever considered becoming ‘International?’ People will be able to find your website from many different places, maps, search engines, directories, blogs, review sites...

A business website levels the playing field:

A website helps you to compete with the ‘big boys’. There’s absolutely no reason why even a small business can’t deliver the goods, just as a Fortune 100 company does. If your website is clear, professional and your image is presented in good light, there should be nothing to hold you back. Your website is built on the same technology as ever other website, the only difference is your desire to succeed.

Does my business need a website if I’m on social media?

YES. YES. YES. Many small business owners think that having a page on Facebook or Twitter is enough, you have some good reviews and interact with your visitors. Great!

The biggest problem with this strategy is that you are always relying on someone else’s social media platform, their rules, or systems. What if they change the way they ‘allow’ you to use their platform? What if they change what they ‘allow’ you to do on their platform? All these changes will be out of your control, and what happens if that platform ‘pulls the plug’ and shuts down? Maybe all your effort, information and customers will also go down the drain!

If you have a website, it belongs to you, and you control the content and the message. Part of the reason you started your own business is so that you don’t have to follow other people’s rules, right? So, why would you just do what a social media platform tells you to?

Trends change, too. If your customers are on Twitter today, they might be on Snapchat or a new platform that none of us have even heard of tomorrow. As people switch from one tool to the next, your website acts as an anchor. No matter what platform customers prefer, they can always find your website in the same place, available to everyone.

You website will always be the ‘hub’ of your online presence. You can modify it over time to reflect the actions and desires of your visitors. People are fickle, what they like today, they despise tomorrow. As new social media platforms are launched people switch their loyalties. It’s predicted that 700,000 under 24 year olds, who used Facebook in 2017, will have switched to other platforms by 2018. You website is the glue that holds your online presence together.

Conclusion: Every business needs a website!
