The answer is:

Responsive web design.

If you develop a website with responsive website design, your website and its sub-pages can adapt dynamically and deliver the best experience to your users. Responsively designed websites looks great whether they’re on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

What is responsive website design?

Responsive website design is a web design practice that makes sure websites and their pages render and display on all devices and screen sizes. They do this by detecting the screen size and automatically adapting the layout of the website content to best fit the screen being used at that time. Be it a desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

Here's an example of a website that's been designed responsivly to look great on any screen size.

And, here's an example of a website that's not responsive or mobile friendly.

In this non-mobile friendly website it's easy to see that interaction would be almost impossible. The text is too small to read, the content still retains its original layout and any clickable text or button is difficult to tap because it's too small.

How does responsive website design work?

Responsive website design works by targeting different ranges of screen sizes as set by the veiw port meta data, with specific design code known as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Using media queries within the CSS files allows the individual properties of a website page to display differently on different sized screens; their orientation, or resolution, and even their color capability.

How to find out if your website is responsive and mobile friendly.

Luckily it's easy to find out if your website is responsive, all the tools you need are contained in your web browser. In this example we'll use Google Chrome as it's the most popular browser in the UK.

  • Right click then select 'inspect' or click F12
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + M to toggle the device toolbar
  • View your page from a mobile, tablet, or desktop perspective

The website will dynamically resize dependent on your selection. You can easily see if your website is responsive and mobile friendly.

You can also use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test tool to see if the pages of your website are mobile friendly.

Why does responsive web design matter to business owners?

Responsive web design matters to business owners for many reasons, but mostly because it's cost effective. Rather than having to maintain several different websites for different devices as we used to have to do, we now only need to maintain one.

It also matters for the concept of 'pleasing Google', after all, a properly built, mobile friendly, responsive website ticks many of Google's requirements. As Google is now taking a 'Mobile First' attitude to how it decides which websites should rank high in the search results, this has to be foremost in the website design program.

Starting July 1, 2019, mobile-first indexing is enabled by default for all new websites (new to the web or previously unknown to Google Search).

Having only one website to maintain also makes the lives of business owners, marketers, and advertisers easier.

Here are a few benefits of responsive website design:

  • One site for every device:  A responsively designed website will be configured for the user's optimal viewing pleasure. Regardless of the screen size it is being rendered on. A responsive website looks just as good on a high density iMac screen as it does on your Andriod powered smart phone.
  • Optimal design for the device: Responsive web design means that all images, fonts, and other HTML elements will be scaled appropriately for the screen size the user has.
  • No need for redirects: Responsive web design does away with the need for 'redirects'. This was a system of redirecting the user to a different URL (website) based upon the size of their screen. Maybe you've seen this before in the URL. For example, the main website would be http://example.com for a desktop, but on a mobile you would be redirected when you typed in http://example.com to your browser to http://m.example.com . This means you can deliver your content to the user as quickly as possible, which again is a key ranking factor for Google.
