How To Improve Your Business During The Coronavirus Pandemic?

10 Ideas to develop your website and give a boost to your business during the Coronavirus outbreak

Coronavirus, or COVID19 is affecting us all, businesses are closed, customers are scarce and the future seems so far away. But, now is an ideal time to give your internet presence a boost, so you can hit the ground running when things start to get back to normal.

Let's face it, under normal circumstances you're far too busy to make the most of your website. Writing a blog takes time. Link building is difficult to get right. And, developing marketing strategies is a daunting task.

But, these are all things you can do from the safety of your home to give your business a boost and improve business, as well as build on your customer relationships. More importantly, if you start to tick these tasks off the 'To-Do' list now, their effects will have begun to take effect when you finally get back to work.

Remember, in business you should be planning now, for the next season. Have you ever thought about why clothing stores seem to be selling off their summer clothing stock in a spring sale? It's simple, they're making room for the winter clothing stock, before winter sets in.

So, let's take a look at how we can turn all this disruption from the Coronavirus to our advantage while staying at home. We've put together a list of website maintenance jobs that always need doing, that you can use for inspiration.

10 Ideas for Business Website Owners To Give Your Website a Boost

#1 Improve The Content Of Your Website

Lush Domain - Improve the content of your website

I know it’s difficult, and getting inspiration is often elusive, but now you’ve got some time on your hands, it’s a great time to build on your website content.

Google rewards websites that provide quality content to the searchers. So now is a great time to take a good hard look at your website, and either add to your existing content, or make some new content to help improve your business. It’s also a good time to evaluate how your website pages are performing using Google analytics.

Sometimes it’s better to have 10 website pages that perform well, rather than 20 website pages that don’t do much for your visitors. By adding value to your web pages, you will see a boost in the search engine rankings. So, make a start now, and get into the habit of continual improvement.

Content is King, so don’t skimp!

#2 Take Bookings In Advance

Lush Domain - Take bookings in advance

Many service businesses have had to close their doors, but that doesn’t mean you have to close your business completely. Businesses like restaurants, bars, garages, chiropractors, chiropodists, and personal trainers all have a system of ‘Booking In’ their clients. So, make a point of using your contact lists and reaching out to your customers, ask them to set an appointment for your service in advance.

Let them know there’s likely to be a rush for bookings when things return to normal, so by booking their slot now they’ll secure a place. This will also help to make sure you have a steady stream of work to return to in the coming months.

It would also be a great time to setup some kind of ‘online booking’ system on your website. These can either be email based, or a fully integrated booking system where your customers can even select their preferred worker. This would be great option for any kind of personal service industry that's looking to improve their business, such as hair salons, nail bars, or MOT test stations.

#3 It Time To Build Your Brand

Lush Domain - It's time to build your brand

We live in a time where competition is high, and those businesses who don’t ‘big themselves up’ get left behind. Use this down time to work on your social media outreach. Using local Facebook groups to help improve your business is a great way to start, if you don’t already have a strong social media presence for your business.

If you do have a following, let them know your latest news, your plans for the future and when you plan to reopen. Don’t limit your posts to just work, people like to do business with ‘friends,’ so become that friend. Just remember to keep your posts clean, professional and rant free!

#4 Boost Your Email Marketing Campaigns

Lush Domain - Boost Your Email Marketing Campaigns

Although the introduction of GDPR has made it more difficult to send out unsolicited emails, it’s not impossible. Most businesses still ask their clients for an email address to keep in contact, and as long as the client did so willingly, you give them a mechanism to unsubscribe, and you don’t flood their mailbox, you should be ok.

There are many email platforms you can use to help you build a mailing list, and many techniques to use to get subscribers. Some will integrate into your website, while others offer a stand alone platform. However you do it, keep your emails full of value, doing so will help to minimise the ‘unsubscribe’ and can even help you find new customers. Effective emails should be quick to read, enticing, include a ‘call to action’ and have links to your social media accounts for sharing.

#5 Analyse Your Website’s Visitor Data

Lush Domain - Analyse Your Website’s Visitor Data

I think this activity is way down the list of things to do in business for many business owners. But, it should be close to the top, it is for us. If you understand how your visitors interact with your website, where they come from and what they do when visiting your website, you can use that data to build and improve your business. Use the data you gather now, to help you plan and build for the future.

#6 Revamp Your Google My Business Page

Lush Domain - Update Your Google My Business Page

It always amazes us how many of our clients either don’t have a Google My Business page, or have one that’s completely out of date. It’s well worth spending a few hours during this lock-down to claim your page and make sure ALL the details are updated. A decent GMB page is a key factor in getting your website listed as one of the 3 entries in the Local Search Panel at the top of the search results.

#7 Add New Products, Or Start Selling Online

Lush Domain - Add New Products, Or Start Selling Online

Just because the front door is closed, doesn't mean you have to shut up shop! If you already sell your products online, then use the down time to add to your existing stock. Add new products and improve the listings of existing products. If you don’t currently sell online, then why not begin your eCommerce journey.

In recent weeks we’ve seen a massive increase in businesses going online, from market gardeners and stationers, to pubs offering home delivery and yoga teachers taking online classes. All these businesses now offer their visitors a chance to purchase goods or services with a credit card without the higher risk of face to face contact.

If you can sell it, there’s no reason not to sell it online and stay in business.

#8 Improve Your Online Business Image

Lush Domain - Improve Your Online Image

If your website is getting old and out of date, as many are, now is a great time to have an update. When you create a website, or improve on a website, it not only raises your online professional image, but it gives confidence about your brand to your new online audience. The same audience you've been carefully building since you started putting into action the advice in this blog post!

If your website is more than 5 years old, there’s a good change that it is not taking advantage of the latest coding technologies, security features, and design styles. There’s nothing worse than trying to find your way around a clunky website that’s difficult to use. Or, one that doesn’t instil confidence in your brand, especially when you're working so hard to improve your business and build your brand.

Of course, building a new website might be way above your skill set, so while your mastering the email and social media campaigns, we would be happy to take that task on for you.

#9 Boost Your Website’s Speed

Lush Domain - Boost Your Website’s Speed

A key factor to online success is speed, potential website visitors are a fickle lot, and statistics show that if your website takes too long to load, they will ditch you in favour of your competition.

There are many techniques involved in making a website load faster, some are easy to implement, some not. Google is now implementing a ‘mobile first policy', so if your website takes more than 5 seconds to fully load, it will be demoted in the search results. Potentially pushing you down below your competition.

If you use a Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress, Joomla, or a website builder to run your website, you can do some of these tasks yourself. If you already run a Blog, an Online Store, or a community website, you will already be familiar with the administrator area of your CMS. In the admin area of your business website, you can add plugins to improve speed, get rid of unused themes, and update your website.

#10 Start Writing A Blog

Lush Domain - Start Writing A Blog

Last on my list, and possibly the one thing that will require the most commitment, is to start writing a blog. But, it’s a catch 22 situation. To get results, you have to invest a lot of time, researching, writing, editing, designing and publishing.

Then you have to optimize it, using SEO to make it easy for Google to find. Even then, after all that time, Google may well choose to just ignore it, and there’s little you can do about it, other than start all over again with a new topic.

Writing a blog is not as easy as it would seem. As mentioned earlier in this blog article, content is king. To run a successful blog to help improve your business, you'll need to find a topic that not only gives value to your visitors, but also is better than your competitions.

A good example would be the blog you are reading right now. It’s informative, hopefully well written, it’s long (1890 words), it offers good advice, it’s unique, and not too ‘heavy’.

If you have a look on Google or Bing for a blog in your niche, take a look at what your competition is writing about, and use that as your lead. But, you must always be of a mindset to be better than what is already there.

A simpler approach if you don’t have the time to commit to writing a blog, is to commission a copywriter, to do so on your behalf. This needn’t cost an arm or a leg, and when you offset the cost against the time you would spend writing and editing the blog post, it’s good value. Some copywriters even offer a discount for ‘bulk’ orders. In general it’s a good idea to keep your blog fresh with new content at least weekly.

In Conclusion:

Don’t sit at home twiddling your thumbs waiting for the Coronavirus pandemic to fade out. Use the time to take positive actions to build your business. Even if you don’t take action on all of our suggestions, pick out a few that you can deal with and get that head start on your competition.
